Just discovered the story on Search Engine Land that Google took indoor pictures of a brick and mortar store for a new product named “Google Store Views”. That will allow Google to further enhance their Google Maps service. Not only will you be able make a virtual walk with Google street view in the future you will be able to walk into the stores. If you think further and combine this with google checkout, google product search, google voice, …you will end up with a virtual layer completely controlled by Google.

A shopping trip to Tokio is a virtual trip within Google maps. Not only can you discover Shibuya but you can enter any store – from your PC or even Mobile Phone. From there you can initiate a call just by pressing a button or following the link to the homepage of the store. The store homepage might be also hosted by Google (Google Sites, Google Checkout Gadget)…There are sooo many possibilities for Google.

I think it’s nearly a year ago i had two sessions with senior executives from yellow pages companies. We had a very interesting discussion about the latest market developments and the threat of being substituted by Over-the-top players like Google, Qype or Yelp. On one page of the slide deck i had an overview of relevant services provided by Google. While talking about Google Maps, i told them, that I’m truly convinced that the next logical step will be the extension of Google Maps with indoor views of brick and mortar stores.

If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines — including Google — do retain this information for some time and it’s important, for example, that we are all subject in the United States to the Patriot Act and it is possible that all that information could be made available to the authorities.

Google just released a offline version of Google Docs. It’s always impressive to see how fast Google is releasing updates and new applications.

I have upgraded this Blog over the weekend to the final WordPress 2.5 release. As far as i can see, everything is working fine. I’m very happy that all plugins and my customized theme are working without any glitches.

As promised, i added a new section called “Worth reading” below my Flickr the photo stream. In this section I link to interesting articles that i have discovered on the internet. The technical solution is quite simple, but very intriguing. I’m using the “share this item” feature of the Google Reader. This feature allows you to to share articles with your friends and the public. I simply embedded the RSS feed of the shared page here. Whenever i discover a interesting story on the web i will share it with you.

Btw. I stopped receiving spam by 100% (comments & trackbacks). How? Perhaps a few of you already have discovered it on the comments page, i have installed a captcha plugin. Frankly speaking, i was just tiered of comment spam.

Deutsche Telekom will launch a service creation platform for developers in the next couple of days, that is probably similar to the BT Web21C SDK. So far i have only seen this press release on the public internet. Here the official quote (in German):

Helios – Open Development.

The internal press release on the corporate Telekom intranet was also very short. Besides BT there are a couple of other carriers who have or plan to introduce such SDKs: Orange UK , Orange Isreal, Vodafone Betavine.

Other interesting SDK’s in the mobile arena are the upcoming Apple iPhone SDK and the already available Google Android SDK.

I think it’s a perfect testbed for so called meshup services. Developers can easily integrate telecommunication services (e.g. initiate a voice call, send a SMS) into their web applications. As soon as i get more information on the subject i’ll make an update. Stay tuned!

Google’s engineering department is pretty busy. They are releasing a tons of new services, incremental updates and features every week. The newest feature, called “Chatback Widget“, is an extension for Google Talk.

If you are a Gmail and/or Gtalk User, you can now integrate a widget on any external website, that allows visitors to start a chat session with you – directly from the website. The visitors do not need any extra application nor a Google account. This means ANY! website visitor can have chat with you. Another advantage is, that there is no need to run Google Talk. Having Gmail open in the browser is sufficient. A pop-up message will inform you that someone has started a chat session. I have added the Chatback Widget on this blog, please scroll down to the bottom of the page and see if i’m available for a chat session.

Video Calls inkl. Video Call Archiv (Video Calls online archivieren)

Text-to-Voice / Voice-to-Text feature

Wouldn’t it be interesting to know which technological standard will prevail? For example Linux vs. Windows Vista? Or Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD? DMB vs. DVB-H? Before you start to buy one of these expensive market research studies, take a careful look at Google.

As always, Google provides you with the answer that you need. The search giant has a little niffty service called Googletrends that might give you a hint which technological standard is hot and how the trend looks like. Below you will find some screenshots of prominent concurrent technical standards. Keep in mind that this 1) on a global scale 2) this can only be a proxy indicator.

Battle Nr.1: Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD

In some kind it’s battle between Next Generation Consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Each one is betting that its disc format (Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD) comes out victorious. Microsoft is in the lead position with it’s headstart with the Xbox360 launch last year. But this means nothing at the moment. Neither the HD-DVD addon Drive for the Xbox360 nor the PS3 are available yet. Therefore time will tell wether Microsoft or Sony will win the race.

Battle Nr.2: DMB vs. DVB-H

Battle Nr.3: Vista vs. Linux

What’s happening here? Seems to be that the hype around linux has cooled down. On the other hand Microsoft is making inroads with Vista. Microsoft marketing machinery gets rolling and Release Candidates of MS new operating system are seen in the wild.

Battle Nr.4: VDSL vs. ADSL2+

Bringing fibre to the curb in order to setup a VDSL access network requires substantial investments by telco carriers. Many smaller city carriers might refuse current plans for very-high speed access networks based on VDSL. They take upgrade path from ADSL to ADSL2+, hoping that the bandwidth is large enough for attrative Triple Play offerings. Competing on price might be feasable strategy for carriers with ADSL2+ access networks.

Battle Nr.5: Wimax vs. UMTS
